"The Silver Coast" covers a lot of ground, and the towns along it are genuinely different from one another. Picking the right base is the first real decision — far more important than any single property. Here's a buyer's-eye orientation to the six municipalities I focus on, and the kind of person each tends to suit. (Remember these are municipalities, so each includes its coast, its town, and the villages around it.)
Quieter and more rural, with a real "dinosaur coast" identity — this is fossil country. Good beaches, a more local feel, and generally better value, while still being within easy reach of Peniche and the Lisbon road. Suits buyers who want space and calm over buzz.
The surf heart of the region. A working fishing port on a dramatic peninsula, with Baleal's beaches and the Berlengas islands offshore. It's windier and more energetic, with a young, international surf crowd. Suits active, outdoors-first buyers — and anyone who wants the ocean as the centre of daily life.
The postcard: a walled medieval town that draws visitors year-round, with the Óbidos lagoon nearby for calmer water. Charming and characterful, which is reflected in pricing and in tourism. Suits buyers who want beauty and history and don't mind sharing the town with day-trippers.
The practical hub — and where I'm based. A proper working town with a hospital, schools, services, a daily fruit-and-veg market, and a strong ceramics tradition. Not on the coast itself, but minutes from Foz do Arelho and the lagoon. Suits buyers who want everyday life to actually function, year-round, not just in August.
Alcobaça is known for its UNESCO monastery and a more inland, traditional pace. Its coast includes São Martinho do Porto, with a famous shell-shaped bay of calm, sheltered water — one of the safest, most family-friendly beaches on this coast. Suits families and anyone who wants gentle swimming over big surf.
World-famous now for the giant waves at Praia do Norte, but at heart still a traditional fishing town with a dramatic clifftop and a long beach. Lively and touristy in summer, atmospheric in winter. Suits buyers drawn to the drama of the ocean and a strong local identity.
On paper they're all "the Silver Coast." On the ground, the right one depends on how you actually want to live — near services or near surf, busy or quiet, coast or countryside. That's the conversation worth having before you start booking viewings.
I'm Ricardo Vieira, and I work only across these six municipalities, only ever for the buyer. If you'd like help working out which one fits you, book a discovery call or download my free Silver Coast Buyer's Guide.
