Most international buyers start their Portugal search with the Algarve. It's famous, it's sunny, and almost everyone they know has been on holiday there. That familiarity is exactly why it's worth pausing to compare it honestly with the Silver Coast — the stretch of coast between Lisbon and the centre of the country — before you commit.
The Algarve has been an international property market for decades, and the prices reflect it, especially in the well-known resort towns. The Silver Coast is earlier in that curve. For the same budget you generally get more space, more land, or a better location — though, as everywhere, the genuinely special properties still go quickly.
The Algarve is built for tourism, and in peak season it feels like it. That's perfect if you want resorts, golf, and a large English-speaking expat community ready-made. The Silver Coast is quieter and more Portuguese — working towns, fishing ports, market days, and beaches that empty out in winter. Some buyers find that authentic and grounding; others miss the buzz. Be honest with yourself about which you actually want.
Both are sunny, but the Atlantic shapes the Silver Coast: summers are a touch cooler and fresher, the landscape stays greener, and the surf is serious. If relentless heat is the dream, the Algarve delivers more of it. If you prefer mild, breezy, and green, the Silver Coast wins.
This is the Silver Coast's quiet advantage. Much of it sits roughly an hour to an hour and a half from Lisbon airport — so visitors, flights home, and city amenities are close. The Algarve is a longer haul from Lisbon (it has its own airport at Faro, but with thinner connections to some countries).
The Algarve isn't a mistake — for a turnkey holiday home in an established expat hub with maximum sun, it's a strong choice. The Silver Coast tends to suit buyers who want better value, a more authentic day-to-day, cooler Atlantic living, and easy access to Lisbon. Neither is "better" in the abstract; they're better for different people.
The expensive error isn't choosing one region over the other — it's choosing a region you've only seen as a tourist. That's the decision worth getting independent help with.
